The Physicality of Voice

A workshop on the embodiment of voice

This workshop is a frame to explore the connection of the voice to the body and how they are mutually affected by each other’s motion. During the workshop, participants experience several approaches and ways of using the voice as a medium connected to the body. My approach is to use examples from my long experience and practice in working with the voice and body in live performance that vary in style, approach, and dramaturgical significance. In a sense, the workshop is an opportunity to become comfortable and at ease in using the voice in public or on stage by exploring its several colors, textures, and dimensions.

Voice is a powerful and probing currency for Haraki. In my capacity as a vocal coach and advisor, I know that whatever I offer her, be it a breath exercise, a vocal resonance or a chain of vowels, she will spin it into gold and make meaning and the meaningful out of it. Something honest, bold and disquieting comes into being through the alchemy that happens when Lia Haraki meets voice.

-Cathryn Robson (Vocal Coach and Singer), excerpt from the essay ' Vocal anchemy and Lia Haraki' in the book 'Performace Works of Lia Haraki'.

    • Feel and sense the relationship of the voice with the rest of your ‘bodies’ (emotional, mental, physical, energetic)

    • Experience how the movement of both the voice and the body can affect sound.

    • Explore voice as abstract sound

    • As text

    • As song

    • Understand its potential as a dramaturgical tool.

    • Release notions related to ‘a good or a bad voice’ related to it.

    • Learn how to warm it up and use it in a caring way

  • The workshop is for anyone interested in opening and exploring the infinite possibilities of this rich medium and tool called voice. So whether you are a performer of any sort or interested in making public presentations or just interested in gaining more confidence with the use of voice, this workshop is for you.

  • I have been using the voice as a central element in my pieces for over twenty years and in this workshop I share my experience, knowledge and various approaches in using it.

Often, the voice becomes the sound of movement and movement the physicality of voice.
