HUMANS BEING
2013
Humans Being is a physical performance about being human together. Five individuals connect through basic human physical characteristics and abilities such as breathing, standing on one leg or sounding together in unison. The several ways of being together serve as a reminder of the uniqueness of the human animal and as an awakening to the limitless potential of its individual and collective nature on various levels.
Humans Being is a hymn to raw beauty, allowing form to meet the formless, instinct to become intuition and the natural to appear as sacred. The piece stands as a reminder that we are all made of the same flesh and bone and share similar fears, thoughts, and ways of being that unite us into a particular species.
In the piece, the bodies of the performers are connected through the creation of physical states of being and forming shapes. The group of bodies often resembles natural landscapes, while at other times it becomes a series of physical soundscapes. In the piece, human nature is often commented upon through images of sensuality and sexuality as reminders of its animalistic instinct. In contrast, at other times, the same nature is led by intuition. In the piece, movement at times becomes dance, sound at times becomes music, and bodies at times become visual illusions.
